Colfe’s top maths students have won 14 Gold, 19 Silver and 19 Bronze certificates in the Intermediate Mathematics Challenge 2012. The Competition, held by the United Kingdom Mathematical Trust, is to challenge the most able maths students in Years 9, 10 and 11. Seven students; Rachael Potter, Alastair Porter, (Year 11) Joshua Gayadeen, Oliver Skeates and Heather Douglas (Year 10), Callum Melly (Year 9) and Maximillian O’ Keeffe (Year 8) have now qualified for the next round which is the Europe wide Kangaroo round on Thursday 15th March.
15 Year old Bhavini Vijapura did exceptionally well and achieved a gold certificate and was awarded the ‘Best in School’ certificate . Bhavini has been selected to sit the Hamilton paper on Thursday 15th March, which is available to the most successful candidates in year 10 in the UK. Bhavini said “I’m really thrilled with the results. I’m particularly pleased because in the past I’ve always been a close second so this time I thought, ooh, I’ve actually won. It’s wonderful. It was quite challenging especially after question 15 where I had to think very hard, but I’m very pleased to have the chance to sit the Hamilton paper.”
The Maths Department’ Dr Vijapura said “This was a fantastic performance by everyone, well done to you all."
The breakdown of results by year is:
Year 11 : 4 Gold, 10 Silver, 4 Bronze
Year 10 : 8 Gold, 6 Silver, 7 Bronze
Year 9 : 1 Gold, 2 Silver, 7 Bronze
Year 8 : 1 Gold, 1 Bronze
Well done to Bhavini who did especially well to achieve Best in School. In addition, Maximillian O’Keeffe followed by Alice Zhelezko who were the best in year 8. Callum Melly followed by Ciara Greaves, the best in year 9. Best in year 10 was Bhavini Vijapura followed by Oliver Skeates and Joshua Gayadeen. And finally, Best in year 11 was Rachael Potter followed by Alastair Porter.
