Colfe’s School prides itself on a well-established and generously resourced General Studies programme which aims to encourage Sixth Form students to develop their general knowledge, thinking skills and appreciation of current affairs. At the heart of the programme is a series of weekly lectures presented by a range of speakers, many of whom return every year.
Regular visitors include Bruce Kent, who always brings fresh and challenging perspectives on politics; Anthony Slinn, whose approach to the history of art is always accessible and entertaining and Emma Cole, whose insights into living with HIV make a sombre subject inspiring. Other speakers in recent years have included Sandra Gregory (author of Forget you had a daughter), Bridget Prentice, M. P. and a former military commander of the Azanian People’s Liberation Army. The lecture series is complemented by a weekly discussion period in which relevant topics can be explored in greater detail. Students are actively supported in entering for the AQA Specification B AS and A2 level examinations, but these examinations are entirely voluntary and are not perceived as the objective of the General Studies course.
The General Studies department also organises some non-sporting activities that take place on the Sixth Form games afternoon and are available to those not required for school teams. Certificated first aid and lifeguarding courses have been regularly available, as well as a programme of cultural walks and visits, community service, and practical work in art, drama and music.
