French Café

Wednesday morning lesson 1 French.  In the classroom?  Not this week!  Having covered the topic of food and in particular rôle-play language with Mrs German, it was with great delight that Mrs Biggs organised an authentic French café in the senior school where all of Year 5 got to engage with 6th form and Year 11 garçons and serveuses.  The customers quickly devoured their croissant, pain au chocolat and pain au raisin which were duly washed down with jus d’orange and chocolat chaud.

Pupils were obliged to talk French and to pay with their homemade euros, credit cards and cheque books.  The singing commenced of “Miam Miam c’est délicieux” and finally prizes were awarded for the best homemade menus.  A great start to the day and a wonderful way to embed the learning of a foreign language.  In the words of some Year 5 pupils : “Best experience!” “Sweet as chocolate!” “ I was full up!” “ A day I will never forget!” “The waiters were great, the food was lovely!” “ “Awesome!” “It brightened up my day!”

Nine Year old Peter, said “ This was really good. We spoke French all the time. The sixth formers and some Year 11s were our waiters and they were really kind and helped us with some of the words if we couldn’t remember.  We had made our own menus and there was a competition to find the best ones, which was won by Annalena, Emma and Raj-Antoine.  But the runners up got a chocolate flake each and the others had their menus laid on the tables.  I feel really ready now to speak French when I go on the Ski Trip next week”

Nine Year old Symran agreed “ Everyone in Year 5 really loved it.  I got to speak French and then the Sixth Form taught us a song about all the food that was in the Café: Miam Miam c’est délicieux. There was plus points for anyone who sang the loudest.  I feel much more confident about speaking French now.”
