English at Colfe’s is taught by a team of seven specialists who meet regularly to sustain and evolve policy. Our aim is simple: to realise every pupil’s full potential as a reader, writer, speaker and listener. We try to achieve this aim through a variety of both traditional and innovative approaches and, above all, try to inculcate a sense of the joy to be derived from language and literature.

We have devised our own flexible English programme for Years 7, 8 and 9, leading to a two-year GCSE course for Year 10 and 11 pupils in preparation for the new AQA English Language and English Literature exams (4705 and 4710). In the Sixth Form, AS and A2 English Literature is a popular sixth form choice with significant numbers of students going on to read English and English-based courses at university.
Outside the classroom we are currently involved in the Carnegie shadowing reading scheme for lower school readers as well as a variety of debating and other activities.
